  To mark the 8th International Day of Yoga 2022, Consulate General of India, Guangzhou organized an event in partnership with several yoga organizations and Indian Diaspora based in Guangzhou on 21 June 2022.


2. Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts performed yoga in front of the iconic Canton Tower on the banks of the Pearl River in Guangzhou. The event, organized in cooperation with Iyengar Yogshala, Guangzhou, was telecast live on Doordarshan as part of the ‘Guardian Ring for Yoga’ / ‘Global Yoga Ring’ and ‘75 IDY Locations’ initiative under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM).


3. Ambassador H.E. Shri Pradeep Kumar Rawat addressed the yoga enthusiasts virtually and mentioned about the importance of yoga, and appreciated the efforts of the Consulate, partner organizations for being part of the ‘Guardian Ring for Yoga’ initiative. He also mentioned about the visit of the famous Yoga Guru BKS Iyenger to Guangzhou in 2011 and his role in promoting yoga in China.


4. Consul General Shri Shambhu Hakki delivered welcome address and joined hundreds of yoga enthusiasts in performing the Common Yoga Protocol. Notwithstanding the inclement weather and Covid-19 related restrictions, the event was well attended by the Chinese yoga enthusiasts, Chinese students from the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS), expats, members of the Indian Diaspora and officials & family members from the Consulate General of India, Guangzhou. Many yoga enthusiasts across South China also joined the celebrations virtually.

Starting from January 2022, Consulate General of India, Guanghzou organized two 3-month long yoga sessions each for Diplomats based in Guangzhou in cooperation with Iyenger YogaShala and Isha Yoga. In the run up to the 8th International Day of Yoga 2022, Consul General of India, Guangzhou, in partnership with Iyenger YogaShala, Guanghzou; Isha Yoga, China; Brahmakumaris World Spiritual University; Zoefan Yoga; Parma Eco Valley; Wind Song Yoga; SohanYoga; Mrs Debika S. Chattopadhyay; Mr Raja Vikrant Jain and Indian Diaspora organized several ‘Curtain Raiser Events’ in various places of South China such as Guanghzou, Zhuhai, Foshan, Sichuan, Chengdu, Wuyishan, Xiamen, Nanping, Fujian, Guilin, Dongguan, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Wuhan, Shijiazhuang, Zhaoqing, Kunming, Shenyang etc. Yoga Clubs of several prominent Chinese Companies including Senstek, Skyworth, KHY Electronics, Foxlink, Apache Footwear Limited, Oppo, Huizhou Guangdong Technology Co., Guilin Guide Superhard Material Co. Ltd., ATL Battery, Sunwoda, Vivo, BYD also organized IDY ‘Curtain Raiser Events’ at their Headquarters.


6. On 18 June, 15 Yoga Studios from South China also joined the Consulate General of India, Guangzhou virtually in connecting with the event organized by Embassy of India, Beijing to celebrate the 8th International Day of Yoga.

7. Concluding the event, Consul General thanked and appreciated everyone for their enthusiasm and felicitated the yoga studios and yoga masters for their contribution in promoting yoga in South China. This was followed by a group photo session.
