Overview of education system in India

The structure of higher education consists of three years of education (after 12 years of school education) leading to a bachelor’s degree in arts and science and 4-5 years undergraduate study in professional fields like engineering and medicine.  This is followed by two years of study for a Master’s degree and at least three years or more for a Ph.D. degree.

The Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) was introduced in the Academic Year 2006-07 for the children of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and those of Non-resident Indians to enable them to pursue Undergraduate courses in Indian Universities/Institutions and promote India as a centre of higher studies.

“SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME FOR DISPORA CHILDREN (SDPC)”

Every academic year, the Government of India through Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) offers 150 scholarships under the scheme “Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC)” to the children of PIOs/NRIs in 68 countries including China, for pursuing undergraduate courses in several disciplines at specified institutes in India. MEA has announced scholarships under SPDC for 2019-20 and details of the same along with the courses and institutes covered, may be seen on the SPDC Portal (www.spdcindia.gov.in).

2. MEA provided financial assistance to the students selected under SPDC covering 75% of the total institutional Economic Cost (IEC), subject to a maximum limit of US$4000/-
